The “Days of Punk” exhibition includes more than 100 photographs by Michael Grecco.

Punk was booming in the 70s and 90s and Michael Grecco captured its peak. On October 15th, the multimedia exhibition dedicated to punk begins, created by American photographer Michael Grecco, and can be visited at the Cascais Cultural Center until January 28th, 2024.

At the invitation of the Dom Luís I Foundation, on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at 6:30 pm, I attended the Opening of the Photography Exhibition “DAYS OF PUNK” by photographer and filmmaker Michael Grecco.

“Days of Punk,” photographer and director Michael Grecco’s solo multimedia exhibition celebrating punk music and culture, opens Friday, May 19 at Anderson Yezerski Gallery in Boston, MA’s SoWa Arts District with an artist’s reception from 5-9PM.

This is the first time Michael Grecco, who was a photojournalist for the Associated Press from 1978-83 and then a staff photographer for the Boston Herald — while regularly shooting shows at night for WBCN and Boston Rock — will exhibit this collection in the US Northeast.

This month there are many noteworthy photography shows popping up around Boston.

“I was one of those alienated high school kids,” photographer Michael Grecco says. Michael grew up in an old-world Italian household in suburban New York during the 1970s. Neither jock nor prep, he was part of a small clique, which he describes as “the outcasts,” who loved art and jazz.

Was it being front row at a Bowie concert as a kid? Was it meeting Van Halen at a record store album signing? Or was it the first time that your band got to play The Whisky A Go Go? Days of Punk, a collection of iconic music snapshots spanning the 1970s and ’80s from photographer Michael Grecco, opened on Aug. 30 at the Southeast Museum of Photography in Daytona Beach. Days first premiered at Photo London in November of last year, and is currently making the rounds on a world tour.

On Monday, September 19 the La Peer Hotel in West Hollywood will host a book signing with Grecco scheduled for 6-9PM. The event is free and open to the public, and books will be available for purchase. The hotel is also placing copies of Punk, Post Punk, New Wave: Onstage, Backstage, In your Face, 1978-1991 in its guest suites.

Daytona State College’s Southeast Museum of Photography opened its Days of Punk exhibition on August 30th. Captured by acclaimed photographer, Michael Grecco, the exhibit offers a raw and thrilling look at the 80’s ceaseless punk culture.

The career of accomplished celebrity and advertising photographer Michael Grecco, who has taken photos for People Magazine, Forbes Magazine, TIME Magazine, Sports Illustrated and several other outlets, started at the age of 19 with a Boston-based internship at The Associated Press.

The Southeast Museum of Photography extended a warm welcome to photographer Michael Grecco and his exhibit, “Days of Punk” the evening of Aug. 30. The collection made its U.S. debut in Daytona Beach, including an appearance and statements from Mr. Grecco during the opening, after premiering in London and Spain.

“Days of Punk,” Los Angeles-based photographer and director Michael Grecco’s multi-media solo exhibit celebrating punk music and culture, will open on Aug. 30 at the Southeast Museum of Photography, a service of Daytona State College, in Daytona Beach.

Photographer Michael Grecco chronicled the explosion of punk music in the United States.

Photographs are available from PHOTIQ as framed, limited edition prints. These are printed on fine art archival paper and mounted in black frames under anti-reflective glass. Each numbered edition print is accompanied by a signed certificate of authenticity.

Renown photographer, Michael Grecco spent a decade embedded in the punk-rock community of Boston during its hey day in the late 1970s through the 1980s. Bouncing between underground clubs he shot everyone from The Clash (pictured above backstage), to The Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys, The Cramps, Buzzcocks, Billy Idol and so many more.

In 162 gorgeous color and black-and-white photos, Grecco takes readers back to a vibrant bygone era as his camera captures the performers’ raw energy and outrageousness both onstage and off.

If you wanted to get an indoor photo during the first wave of punk rock, you needed a camera that you could adjust the settings on, and you had to learn what the settings were. That didn’t really change until the advent of digital photography, which makes photographs from this era extra rare.

American photographer Michael Grecco’s latest book Punk Post Punk New Wave: Onstage, Backstage, In Your Face, 1978-1991 is a visceral reminder of what freedom looks like. In 2017, I was inspired to start combing through my archives of the punk and rock ‘n roll photos that I shot when I was living in Boston during college and after, shooting for the Associated Press, and for the legendary FM station WBCN-FM. Thousands of images had been stored for decades, never seeing the light of day. In revisiting this body of work, I more than anything wanted it to be seen. The result is my latest book, Post, Post-Punk, New Wave: Onstage, Backstage, In Your Face, 1978-1991, published by Abrams Books in November 2020.

Grecco’s days in the trenches of punk clubs inspired his career trajectory. “It exposed me to more self-expression, and made me continue to strive for it,” Grecco said. “It was impetuous for me to leave the Associated Press, and the Boston Herald, and go off to LA in the late ’80s to do the portrait work I’ve been doing since, but People Magazine had invited me to be a regular contributor, and I was driven to seek creativity and authenticity.

Michael Grecco is a professional photographer and basically cut his teeth with these selections, taken mainly in Boston, although there are some from other east coast cities and the subtitle is Onstage, Backstage, In Your Face, 1978-1991.

In the 70s and 80s, when Grecco was shooting most of these images, a lot of the people featured in his book were from the yet-to-be-famous set. This was a distinct advantage for Grecco and it shows in this work. The photos here, many of which feature now-famous faces, (Elvis Costello, Joan Jett, Billy Idol, Lou Reed, etc.) are decidedly candid and intimate. Grecco has photographed a lot of famous people in the music industry and he has done so with great skill.
